Local device donation drive provides lifeline to digitally excluded in Cardiff and Swansea

A new initiative to provide devices and connectivity is launching in Cardiff and Swansea. Housing Association Hafod and Swansea Council for Voluntary Services (SCVS) are aiming to distribute 1,500 smartphones and tablets to individuals without digital access, as part of the Community Campaign set up and run by O2 and environmental charity Hubbub. Hafod in Cardiff and SCVS in Swansea have received the first smartphones and are encouraging local businesses and individuals to donate more devices, which will be data-wiped and cleaned before being redistributed. Health boards to receive additional funding to complete £17m programme of energy efficiency schemes

Three health boards will receive more than £10m in Welsh Government funding this year and next, to install new solar energy measures and help them improve energy efficiency across their estates, resulting in carbon and financial savings. This investment builds on £2m provided last year, as part of a larger £17m programme. The funding – repayable on an Invest to Save basis – will support energy projects for Swansea University Health Board, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the Hywel Dda University Health Board. Council leaders call for city support package

The leaders of three major Welsh councils are calling for a comprehensive and significant support package to help cities through the pandemic. Those who head Cardiff Council, Newport City Council and Swansea Council say that, although direct action continues to be taken by local authorities and major investment made, cities are being particularly badly impacted by the crisis.
